I have an exciting little treat for all of you Scout & Nimble readers…especially those of you who want to add a little style to your wardrobe. Not by me, of course…I’d like to think of myself as being “stylish”, but I would be happier strolling through the aisles of a hardware store than I would a clothing store. I know…it’s insane. But, my sister…she can seriously rock it in the wardrobe area. If I am stumped by what to wear, I call her. She really truly knows my closet better than I do and can put together some amazing outfits in a matter of minutes. I have asked her if she would mind sharing her wealth of knowledge with all of us on a regular basis and lucky for all of us, she agreed! So, let me officially introduce my sister, Sarah, to all of you…I’ve asked her to share a little bit about herself and 5 things that she is really into right now. Who knows, maybe you will get some outfit ideas to look amazing for the upcoming holiday!
Jesse asked me to share a few things that I love…my family, first and foremost, the smell of lavender, vanilla and sandalwood (not all together). Champagne and bratwurst…is that weird? I love winter…no sweating (the 102 degree days of a Missouri summer are starting to kill me), the snow, the flushed cheeks of my children. With my mind focused on love and with Valentine’s Day around the corner I came up with 5 items I love to love for winter…..these items could work as gifts too, even if that gift is for you. I hope this inspires a great outfit for your next party or if you just want to be extra cute on a random Tuesday.
These are few of my favorite things….
#1. I love to love LEATHER, well, vegan leather anyway. I am obsessed with the Emily D vegan leather legging from Urban Outfitters and the price is a steal at $68.
They look amazing with a plaid button up and converse for running errands. Or throw on a draped sweater and booties and kill any party with some real or “real if you say so” diamond earrings. Piperlime features the Sabine vegan leather fringe skirt.
Again, perfect with a tank and boyfriend jacket with a pump or bootie for a party party, but it can easily become causal with a vintage tee, denim jacket and motorcycle boot. If going the legging or skirt route just isn’t your style look it the direction of a great leather jacket. The leather biker jacket from Zara is crazy perfect…..this jacket can take you easily from day to night. If commitment isn’t your thing, look for little pops of leather like on the sleeves of the Harlow Sweater from Need Supply Co.
or rock it on your wrists with a leather bracelet. Leather really is everywhere, from decorative bowls, iPhone covers, to picture frames. You can’t go wrong if you get some or someone something leather for this Valentine’s Day.
#2. Sparkle all the way! I love sequins, but, man oh man, can it get “all drag queen up in here” wicked fast. The only rule I try to follow with bling is less is typically is the way to go. If you show up in the long maxi sequined skirt
available at Windsor, & happens to be less than $50, rock it with a simple black tank top and have a Sharon Stone moment. Pair the skirt with a boots and chunky cable knit sweater and its everyday chic. I heart the navy sequined tanks from Old Navy
Old Navy is quite possibly one of my favorite places for the cheap and trendy. The tank yearns for wide leg pants and a nude or animal print heel…I mean they need each other. If my husband is listening Zara’s long black long sequined blazer is on my list.
This jacket would easily rule with baggy jeans and a great boot with or without a heel. But, once you throw it on with that great black jumpsuit from your closet and tons of gold jewelry, you are ready to start your own party. All right, real fast look at the Gianni Bini Jeanna Platform Pump covered in sparkle
A black suit with those shoes, super minimal jewelry, hair pulled back…might be slightly 90‘s, but in the best way ever. Again, if you are not ready to make the big jump, check out all the sequined bags, scarves, and earrings…sequins should be on everyones wish list.
#3. What’s your favorite animal? This seems to be a favorite conversation between my 4 and 2 year old at the breakfast table. Me and my sweet sister, Jesse favorites have always been a tie between an elephant and an owl (thanks to our wonderful grandmother Yai Yai). But once I saw this Tiger Printed Top at Zara , I thought “maybe I love tigers”.
Fast forward to finding the owl top on Asos and I thought “no, I love owls”.
Well, maybe I love both. Both shirts could be paired with a great wool patterned pant…high waisted would be lovely and a colorful heel…my brain wants it to be raspberry, for some reason. On the flip side, you could put on your favorite skinny pant and knee high boot and you are done and done. Literally, you can find any animal print you love or one wanting you to love everywhere. Check out Polyvore and see everything from a true animal print, to fido on a sweater. I love a true leopard and cheetah print, but once again, you can become Peggy Bundy real quick if you aren’t careful. I love J.Crew’s cheetah print calf hair skinny belt
and the Anne Klein Serafina Platform Pumps at Macy’s
Rings, necklaces and earrings are all getting some animal love and would also make a perfect little gift for someone you love.
#4. Back to booties. I love a bootie, but I sure hate saying that word. Ankle boot? Short boot? Doesn’t really work for me any better, but man can a bootie work an outfit out…giiiirl. For everyday, I love the Minnetonka Moccasin
I wear them with everything from yoga clothes to a pleated skirt and denim button-up. If you don’t have a pair of ankle moccasins…run and get a pair…you will wear them like slippers. Ok, but that doesn’t help with the party end of things, right? If you are like me and love to love a heel, please feast your eyes on the Dora by Rachel Zoe
or the Look Out 2 by Chinese Laundry
Both can be found on Piperlime and both are sexy shoes and thats exactly what they will do for any outfit. Whether paired with leather leggings and a sequined skirt or a pair of jeans, these boots are stealing the show. No heel options are out there too, the Weakley by Aldo is a great alternative.
It is a super sexy flat pair that would work best with skinnies/leggings, ankle length skirts or a mini dress…super hip and everyone loves a hipster.
#5. Last on my list is gold bangles!!!! Or silver. In my last post I made a comment about all women need gold and silver hoops in their jewelry case because they work with most outfits and are a great go to option. The same can be said for bangles…the sound of them brushing together is a melody that I and my kiddos love. Depending on the size they can make you feel feminine to Cleopatra sexy. Check out Overstock for a simple silver or gold bangle, they have a ton of options. A simple bangle can uplift any outfit including pajamas. 😉 Shopbop offers a ton of bangles to gaze upon. Going for sleek? Check out the boyfriend bangle.
Edgey? Look at the cc skye mercy gold spike braclet.
If looking for a funky statement piece you might want to checkout the honeycumb bangle set at Anthropologie.
If you have been really good this year maybe you could talk your sweetheart into a couple of different styles to fit your different moods.
Wow!?! Sarah, obviously, you are my sister so I think you are pretty much the coolest, but seriously, so many classic pieces that I would have never thought about adding to my wardrobe until now. I’m drooling over the cheetah pumps and long sequined blazer. Seriously…I may have to give clothes shopping another shot. 😉 And is it bad, that I have never even heard of some of the places that you mentioned??? I’m so looking forward to your must haves for Spring! Hint, hint… 😉
