More Than Just a Name: Scout & Nimble

I am often asked where the name Scout & Nimble comes from. It isn’t a name chosen on a whim; there is so much meaning behind it that it’s hard to sum it up in a simple answer.

The name actually came from my grandmother Marjorie Walbridge Henslee, or Yai-Yai as all of her grandchildren called her. Yai Yai has always been such an inspiration to me. Brave, strong, courageous, confident, and determined are just a few of the adjectives that I would use to describe her.  She is my ultimate definition of a strong woman.

When she was just days old, she was left on the doorstep of a doctor’s house in New York with a note explaining that her parents could not care for her. No name, no information, and no birthday was listed. She was a nameless and helpless baby girl left all alone in this world. This doctor knew of a couple that had been struggling to get pregnant. He contacted them and helped arrange for the adoption.

She grew up, got married, and had four children, the third being my mom, and settled into a life in Tennessee. When my mom was around 13, my grandmother faced a major decision about her marriage.  In the end, and for the sake of her children, she decided to pick up and leave with them and ask for a divorce, which was a bit unusual during that time. She had no real plan or where to go, so she decided to just head out west and look for some land.

She had grown up with horses and thought she could get into farming. Eventually, Yai-Yai connected with a realtor who had said there was some land in Springfield, Missouri, that might fit the bill. Once she saw the land in person, she knew it was just the right place to build a new life for herself and her four children. She set her mind on farming, typically a man’s work at that time, and did very well for herself while continuing to raise her children as a single parent. Eventually, my parents built a house just around the corner from Yai-Yai. She played such an important role in my life growing up. This is me with my Yai-Yai and is one of my favorite pictures of her.

She named all of her vehicles, and the two that sat in the garage were Scout & Nimble. Scout was a blue International Scout, always filled to the brim with hay. She would drive Scout around the farm in her feeding clothes: jeans, a solid sweatshirt, usually in green or blue, dark green rubber boots, and often a windbreaker. I can still remember the smell of that vehicle like it was yesterday. One of my favorite things was to ride along in the back, sitting up on a bale of hay watching her talk to her horses and do what she loved.

The other vehicle was a gray 1968 Buick Rivera with personalized “NIMBLE” license plates. Yai-Yai took Nimble into town to run errands and go to church or other social events. Back in the day, before child restraints and car seats, my siblings and I would argue about who would get to sit on the middle hump right next to Yai-Yai. Many days that we would drive by to see which cars were in the garage. It was always a treat to see both Scout & Nimble and know that we would be able to go in and hang out with Yai-Yai.

When I started the blog back in 2011, I had a vision of where I wanted it to go. It was a bit of a leap of faith for me. It seemed fitting to name it after something that represented my grandmother and her way of life. She was a woman who literally did not worry. She would choose a direction, and then she’d go after it, never looking back or fearing it wouldn’t work. If it didn’t pan out, she had faith that another door would open and something else would be there. Yai-Yai wasn’t afraid of a challenge or hard work and never feared going against the grain.

We have been hard at work for the past few years bringing our vision to life. To say we are excited to show you is a huge understatement. We cannot wait to show you! It only feels right that you truly understand our foundation and our story. Scout & Nimble is not just another website. We are dreamers; we are creative thinkers who do not see limits where others might. Those monster sized dreams should be thought up and then pursued with fierce determination. We want to see those big dreams become realities.
