Scout & Nimble: How far back does your love for interior design go? When did you know this is what you wanted to do for a living?
Kelly Nutt: My mom did interior design so I was exposed to it all often as a kid. As funny as it sounds I was always rearranging my room and finding new ways to reinvent my little space. In my early twenties I started working for Ralph Lauren in their women’s wardrobe department. However, I found myself helping more of my costumers with their homes than their wardrobes. From there I transferred to Ralph Lauren Home and that is really where it all began.
S&N: What are three words that describe your design aesthetic?
KN: Fresh, timeless and collected.
S&N: What inspires you and where do you seek inspiration?
KN: I love and have an obsession with coffee table books. I thumb through them on a daily basis. I have looked through some so many times I have them memorized, but somehow each time I seem to absorb something new.
S&N: What is your favorite part of the design process besides, of course, the finished product?
KN: I really like textiles and all the different layers they add. Rogers & Goffigon, Nicky Rising, Zak & Fox and Ralph Lauren always have incredible textiles and are my go to vendors.
S&N: What is currently your favorite design “trend?”
KN: My favorite trend right now would be the use of different metals on hardware. I think the brass trend can be fun when used in the right spaces or small special moments.
S&N: What is your favorite go-to detail to help finish or complete a look for a space?
KN: Fresh flowers and a few collected accessories are the ultimate finishing touch to any space. Once we add that layer it really feels complete!
S&N: We love hearing people’s answers on this next question. Fill in the blank: People don’t know that I can ____.
KN: People don’t know that I can hula hoop like nobody’s business.
S&N: If you had to choose, what’s your favorite room in a home to design and why?
KN: The great room/kitchen because that is where family and friends gather the most. It’s where all the fun is!
S&N: What’s one mistake when it comes to design that you see people make on a consistent basis?
KN: I see people on a consistent basis rushing to get a space done and therefore not investing the time and quality that project calls for. Ultimately, in the end, they end up spending more money and time trying to get it right because they didn’t the first time around.
S&N: What’s one piece of advice for someone beginning to decorate a space or someone who wants to makeover a room in their own home?
KN: My advice would be for them to ask themselves how they plan on using and living in the space before doing anything.
